We are Plant-Based (Vegan) Soul Food Experts.

We create foods that are unique, sophisticated, flavor-full, nourishing, delicious, plant-based (vegan). Our food is made using high quality ingredients, all natural and, organic whenever possible.

 

There are six common food allergens corn, wheat (gluten), soy, dairy, eggs and peanuts. We make our food with real ingredients and without five of the most common allergens gluten, soy, dairy, eggs and peanuts (note: we use other nuts and serve cornbread). We use nondairy milks, coconut, almond, hemp, rice, teff, quinoa, and cashew just to name a few.. Our baked goods are made with gluten-free whole grain flours, mostly alternative sweeteners, (unrefined and healthy), and pure cold-pressed oils.

We love plant based eating and are often asked where do we get our protein, It’s easier than you might think. Vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, peas and lentils all contain protein.. So those who typically don't follow a vegan or plant-based lifestyle don’t need to worry about getting enough protein in a meal at

Over the last 9 years we have grown from offering one product (Live Blue Crabs) and now offer a broad spectrum of fresh seafood item including Blue Crab, Stone Crab, King Crab, Snow Crab, Dungeness Crab, Grouper, Snapper, Hog Fish, Tuna, Mullet, Mullet Roe, Oysters, White Shrimp, Pink Shrimp, Royal Red Shrimp, Clams, Scallops, Muscles, and all the fresh caught reef fish you can imagine.

In 1968 the late Rev. John A. “Big John” Stephens opened Big John's Alabama Barbeque in East Tampa, Florida on 40th Street North.

“Big John”, came to Tampa from Eufaula, Alabama. He with his family in tow came to the area with goals of being an entrepreneur but most importantly a man of God. He obtained and exceeded that goal and “Big John’s” is still in existence today, 42 years later.

Big John ran the business for some 25 years until his demise in 1994. His passing and his legacy was surmountable to many in the Bay Area. His wife and children continue his legacy by providing good food, great customer service and southern hospitality.

He was recognized and awarded for his contributions to the community by the Tampa Tribune and other media outlets.

His son Fred Stephens, continues the tradition and keeps the business and barbeque going. Big John’s Barbeque is known for its open pit style barbequing and has continued this technique for over 40 years.


The wife of Rev. Stephens, Mrs. Sallie Stephens, along with her children, recently celebrated their Grand Re-Opening in January 2010! Big John’s has been recognized throughout the community, the state and the world, for there superb service and great food.

They were nominated by Steve Harvey (actor, radio personality, and author) during his Hoodie Awards Show in the catagory of “Best Barbeque Restaurant” in 2007. Big Johns is also known for its signature sauce, open pit barbeque grill and made to order service.

The Black Chef Eatery is family-owned and curated by Executive Chef Kyle Luke, MBA, Mammie Luke, and Edward Keith. Owner/Executive Chef Kyle Luke, has 12 years of experience in the food service industry. He is an alumni of Johnson & Wales University where he earned his Masters in Hospitality Management. He has taught as a college professor for Miami Dade Culinary Institute, and Johnson & Wales University in the subjects of Hospitality Marketing, Basic Culinary Skills, Vocational Training and as a Proctor for Certifications. He has a WSET level 2 in wines certification from the International Wine and Spirit Centre in London.Early in his career he worked as a Private Chef, all up and down the east coasts. He’s had the pleasure to cook for Dwayne Wade, Mario Chalmlers, Portugal Ambassador, Mark Fisher, and Dwayne Johnson “The Rock”.  Along with hosting various private events and pop ups he worked internationally at a 4 star resort on the island of St. Maarten as the Executive Chef. Mammie Luke Chief Marketing Officer/Owner has over 10 years of experience in corporate marketing. She has spent many years executing and studying consumer analytics. Her past experience is working with five clinical research locations between South Florida and Charleston, South Carolina where she led the marketing department with recruitment and increased the amount of receivables by 1.5 million. She has received awards for community based events that fights the stigma of mental health illnesses specifically in minorities in South Florida by Greater Gift. Restaurant Manager/ Owner Edward Keith III he has over 6 years of experience in business operations and sales. He was a manager at the Coast Guard in logistics. He has been a logistics manager for several years with a Baltimore, Maryland establishment where he did inventory, process, employed vendors and contractors to assist with the infrastructure.
